Schwartz Rounds provide a structured forum where all staff, clinical and non-clinical, come together regularly to discuss the emotional and social aspects of working in healthcare. They’re an evidence-based intervention that have been shown to improve staff wellbeing.
The purpose of Schwartz Rounds is to understand the challenges and rewards that are essential to providing care, not to solve problems or to focus on the clinical aspects of patient care. The session allows colleagues a chance to take a pause from their duties whilst allowing time and space to reflect on their role, helping them feel more supported in their job.
Panellists each share a personal story around a particular theme, and members of the group can just listen and even comment themselves reflecting on their own experiences.
Salford Care Organisation launched its first Schwartz Rounds session in November 2021 and we’re hoping to roll out the programme across the other sites in the near future.
The first Schwartz Round was well received and met with positive feedback from the audience who wrote:
“[The session] gave some insight and validation to fears I have and how to deal with them.”
“It was very thought provoking, engaging, emotional (but well managed).”
“As a student it was lovely and empowering to hear that other colleagues have faced challenging scenarios and learned from them. It makes me feel less alone going forward as a healthcare professional.”
Evidence shows that staff who attend Rounds feel less stressed and isolated, with increased insight and appreciation for each other’s roles. They also help to reduce hierarchies between staff and to focus attention on relational aspects of care.
Dates of the scheduled Schwartz Rounds are listed below. There’s no need to book a place to attend a session but, due to current guidelines and Covid restrictions, there’s limited space available and we may not be able to accommodate everyone this time. If you can attend, please arrive on time to avoid disappointment.
